Description
STILL I RISE, a mixed media collage series, incorporates archival facsimiles of photographs compiled by W.E.B. Du Bois called the “American Negro”. The collection of photos of affluent young African Americans was exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Du Bois’ goal was to fight the stereotypical notion that the Negro was of a singular “type”. In other words, he was showing that Black folks have risen from slavery and are achieving economically, socially, and culturally. In addition to the photographs, embedded within Cora Marshall’s works are phrases and text from Maya Angelou’s 1978 poem, “Still I Rise”.
