About Cora Marshall

Cora Marshall ARTIST'S STATEMENT
In my artmaking, I create and explore imaginative spaces that expand my notions of the nature of life and my place in the world. My subjects are almost always figurative, and I am intrigued with spatial depth that can be created using layers of paint and mixed media textures. Often, my art is centered on spirituality, and I create work that seeks out the connections to and lessons from my Christian, African, and Native American past. By mixing symbols and meaning, by affirming the potency of the past, by honoring the holy, through my work, I contemplate the significance and depth of the power of the past to inform the present. As an artist and art educator for most of my life, the impulse to create is part of who I am. It centers me and informs how I move through the world. As I continue to create, living at the water’s edge restores my soul daily and provides a tranquil rhythm in my life that allows me to touch, reflect, and tap into my creative self.
